Health
Medical facilities and trained staff are limited in the Hanang region due to insufficient funding and infrastructure. Local people often treat their own ailments with support from the many medical dispensaries scattered throughout population centers. The Tumaini and Haydum hospitals are also available to care for those in need.

Tumaini Hospital
As the only government hospital in the district, Tumaini faces challenges in meeting the demands of all who are in need. Minimal renovations have been done in the twenty years since the hospital’s construction and much-needed funding for staff training and supplies has been a challenge to obtain. The first major project in need of attention is the upgrade of the maternity ward to include more modern equipment. Nevertheless, the hospital staff serves the local community to the best of their ability and hundreds of patients are successfully treated every year.
Haydum Lutheran Hospital
Since 1955, this private referral hospital has been serving the Tanzanian people with high-quality holistic healthcare. Recently, the institution expanded its reach to 7 Districts in 4 Regions covering 900,000 people, with a capacity of 420 beds and 680 employees. The costs to run the high-end modern facilities are covered by patients as well as international donors and revenue from extensive farmland holdings. While the hospital remains inaccessible for some, it provides life-saving care for many patients and plays an important role in medical research and education.
